Move & Groove Like an Animal

WIGGLE, WIGGLE, WIGGLE!

Move and Groove with DPPL visited Mohawk Park in Des Plaines today.

We moved our bodies into different animal shapes while reading Wiggle! Like an Octopus by Helen Ziefert and Stretch by Doreen Cronin.

Not only do both books emphasize movement, they also contain repetition and rhyming text.

Dino on chalk course
Hearing and using rhyme, rhythm and repetition as well as moving their bodies helps children develop early literacy and gross motor skills.

Additionally, they help with memory and build cognitive skills like reasoning.

Pairing learning with music can do this as well and is why we sang and danced at the park today.

If you didn’t get a chance to move to these stories, we left a chalk course behind.

This course not only encourages motion, but also works on receptive language and executive functions to prepare children to follow directions in preparation for school.

Below is a list of great titles you can pick up at the library that emphasizes movement while reading the story.

Thanks to the Des Plaines Park District for letting us Move & Groove in the park!
