It’s Wednesday. Let’s Do The Butterfly!

The Very Impatient Caterpillar

The Very Impatient Caterpillar by Ross Burach

The dance move?

No.

The swimstroke?

No.

Soooo, just a regular, old butterfly then?

Yup!

But trust us.

There's nothing regular or old about this one.

Our butterfly is gonna be a BUDDAH-FLY! 😎

This week, get ready to metamorph some paper into a beautiful BUTTERFLY!

All you really need is construction paper, a poster board and some scissors.

Oh! And lots and lots of TAPE!

Hmm, a Sharpie or a pencil may also come in handy.

Step 1

Step 1

Draw A Butterfly Outline.

Take a pencil and maybe a ruler to draw out a simple outline of a butterfly.

Then, trace it over with a Sharpie.

Step 2

Step 2

Cut Up Some Strips.

Use multiple colors of construction paper.

Cut it up into 2 inch strips.

Step 3

Step 3

Tape Down Paper Loops.

Pick one color and turn each strip into a loop.

Use tape where the two ends meet to stick them down.

Shape them over the outline.

Keep adding loops and border each wing.

Step 4

Step 4

Build Layers.

Take the next color and repeat Step 3.

Try to tape the strips a little closer together this time.

Again, follow the outline's shape.

Step 5

Step 5

Keep Going!

Continue adding layers towards the center.

Mix it up! Alternate 2 colors of strips in one layer.

Cover up all the blank space.

Step 6

Step 6

Make A Body.

Draw and cut out a body for your butterfly.

Tape or glue it to the center.

We chose to use foam but cardstock works too.

Don't forget to add some antennae! Make them 3D with some pom poms.

Step 7

Step 7

Decorate!

Give your butterfly some glam.

Draw on a face, add some gems, and throw some fun foam stickers on its wings.

Feel free to decorate beyond the center too.

Cocoons

COCOONS ARE SO LAST SEASON!

And we have a BUDDAH-FLY!

Ruby's rockin' her new wings. So pretty!

How did yours turn out?

Most bugs are deemed icky but they're super important to the environment.

Butterfly Collage

Out of all the different patterns, how many butterflies look like they have eyes?

They are nature's decomposers.

Without them, dead plants and animals would rot and the world would stink up real fast.

Others like bees and butterflies pollinate plants and help them grow.

Butterflies are mostly solitary creatures.

Hence where the term "social butterfly" comes from is definitely a thinker.

But do us a favor and be one for us.

Snap a couple of photos, tag them #DPCrafternoons and share with us on Facebook and Instagram.

Until next time!
