Monks Mound, located at the Cahokia Mounds in Collinsville, was occupied in 900 CE by a Mississippian culture!

While Monks Mound may be a site from the past, First American and Native American peoples’ presence and impact isn’t limited to distant history.

Every November, Native American Heritage Month celebrates the past and present of Native Americans across the U.S.

Not only do we highlight diverse and distinct Native American cultures, but the ways in which these communities have been impacted by colonization and cultural erasure.

From homes and land to names and languages, Native Americans have suffered great losses as a result of colonization.
