General Canvas Guidelines
WELCOME TO THE CANVAS!
We’re so glad you’re here! The Canvas at Des Plaines Public Library is a hands-on space designed for creativity, innovation, and learning. This area is dedicated to makerspace equipment and services, so please use other library areas for reading, relaxing, or non-DIY work.
To keep the Canvas safe, fun, and productive for everyone, we’ve put together some helpful guidelines. By using this space, you agree to follow these rules and complete a waiver form once you’ve reviewed everything.
GENERAL SAFETY RULES:
Supervision:
- The Canvas is open to patrons aged 15 and older.
- Anyone ages 12-15 must be accompanied by an adult, with certain equipment requiring staff approval.
- Some machines require staff supervision—just ask if you’re unsure!
Orientation & Training:
- All users must attend a makerspace orientation before using any equipment.
- You’re responsible for completing any additional training needed to use the tools independently.
- Don’t forget to fill out your waiver before you get started!
Reservations:
- After orientation, you can reserve equipment by calling ahead or speaking with a librarian at the desk.
- Each session lasts up to three hours, with extensions if no one is waiting.
- Please check in at your scheduled time; after 15 minutes, we’ll offer the spot to the next person on the list.
RESERVATION, WALK-INS, AND CANCELLATIONS
Booking a Session:
- Once you’ve completed orientation, you can reserve equipment by calling or visiting the library desk.
- Each patron gets one session per day, lasting up to three hours. If no one is waiting, you may get extra time!
- Library programs receive priority use of the space. Your booking may have to be rescheduled if the library needs access to the space during that time. You will be notified if this is the case.
Walk-Ins:
- Equipment that hasn’t been reserved is available on a first-come, first-served basis.
Cancellations:
- If you can’t make your reservation, please cancel at least 24 hours in advance.
- Repeated no-shows may affect your ability to book future sessions.
USING MATERIALS IN THE MAKERSPACE
Purchasing Materials:
- Materials for makerspace tools are available for purchase. Check our website for a price list.
- We don’t offer refunds for materials or remnants, so double-check your needs before starting.
- Materials for purchase from the library are limited per person so there are enough for everyone!
Bringing Your Own Materials:
- If you’d like to bring your own supplies, get them approved by staff first. You can find a list of approved materials and vendors on our website.
RESPECTING THE SPACE
- Be considerate of others, take care of the equipment, and leave the space ready for the next person.
- Disruptive behavior may result in a loss of makerspace privileges.
- Do not move or unplug tables and equipment without asking staff first.
KEEPING THINGS TIDY
- Please keep your workspace clean and organized to avoid accidents.
- When you’re finished, tidy up and leave leftover materials for staff to process.
- Food and drinks aren’t allowed in the makerspace to keep the equipment safe.
NEED HELP? JUST ASK!
- Not sure how to use a tool? Our staff is here to help!
- We can guide you, but completing your project is up to you.
LIABILITY AND INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY
- You’re responsible for understanding copyright laws when creating designs or projects. Please see the Fair Use & Intellectual Property Guidelines for more information.
- The library is not liable for project failures, personal equipment damage, or data loss.
- Users are responsible for covering repair costs for any damage caused beyond normal wear and tear.
RESTRICTIONS
To keep the makerspace safe and welcoming, please don’t use the equipment to create items that are:
- Illegal, unsafe, or harmful
- Intended as weapons
- Obscene or inappropriate for a public library
The library reserves the right to refuse any project at any time.
SAFETY FIRST
In Case of an Emergency:
- First aid kits are located at both ends of the room. Let staff know if an injury occurs.
- Fire extinguishers are next to the first aid kits. If there’s a fire risk, alert staff and evacuate if necessary.
Material Safety:
- Only use approved materials to avoid damaging equipment or putting others at risk.
- Staff may cancel or deny use of materials or tools that pose a hazard.
