The Canvas FAQ
Please read the General Usage Rules for any questions not answered here.
What is a makerspace?
A makerspace is a creative workspace with tools and equipment for hands-on projects like 3D printing, laser cutting, sewing, and more. It’s a place to learn, experiment, and build ideas.
Who can use the makerspace?
You must be a Des Plaines Library cardholder to use the Canvas. Patrons must be at least 12 years of age to use library equipment in this space. Patrons under 15 years of age must be under the direct supervision of an adult, with specific equipment (indicated by signage) requiring staff approval.
Is everything in the makerspace free?
No. Using the machines is free, but all supplies and materials must be purchased by the patron, unless a library program provides it.
How can I get access to the makerspace?
Patrons must attend an orientation and sign a waiver before they are allowed to start reserving a table and machine.
Can I use the space without a library card?
No. The Canvas is only accessible to Des Plaines Public Library cardholders.
Can I bring a friend or family member to help with my project?
If the friend or family member will be using the equipment, they need to complete the orientation and sign the waiver. If they’re just helping in other ways, no orientation or waiver is needed.
Do I have to make arts and crafts in The Canvas? Can I do other things like study?
All patrons in The Canvas must be using the makerspace for creative purposes. Activities like hanging out, studying, or reading are not allowed in the space, and should be done in library spaces outside of The Canvas.
Can I bring my own materials, or do I have to use what the makerspace provides?
Patrons can purchase approved materials from the library. Non-library materials must be approved before use, so make sure you have all of the product specs available to be reviewed. The list of approved and banned materials is available on the library website.
Can I reserve a machine in advance?
Yes! After you attend an orientation, you can reserve a room on the DPPL website or by calling the library.
Are there restrictions on what I can make?
Definitely yes. As stated in the policy, patrons cannot make:
- Content or objects prohibited by federal, state, or local law.
- Weapons, weapon parts, or look-alike weapons.
- Objects that would be considered obscene, vulgar, or suggestive.
- Content that intentionally distributes malware or similar malicious software or hardware to library computers or networks.
I have experience, can I use the machine on my own?
All patrons must attend an orientation and sign a waiver form before using the machines in the Canvas; experience alone will not suffice. Specific machines will need librarian attendance at all times, regardless of prior experience.
