Summer Reading Club 2010: Green Days of Summer

Thank you for participating in The Green Days of Summer with us! We hope you had fun and read lots of great books. Stay tuned for Winter Reading Club 2011. For all children through 6th grade. Begins June 5, 2010.

Winter Reading Club 2011

For all ages up to 8th grade. Warm up with weekly prize drawings. Details coming later in the Fall. You will receive complete guidelines when you register.

Reading Patch Club

Preschool through 8th grade. Earn patches in a variety of categories including fantasy, scary stories, read-to-me and historical fiction. Sponsored by Friends of the Des Plaines Public Library. Offered September through May. Registration required.

Battle of the Books

For grades 4 - 5 and grades 6 - 8. Read selected books and form teams to answer questions during the “Battle of the Books.” Booklists will be available at the Youth Services Desk in March 2010. Held once a year in May. Registration required.

Rebecca Caudill Book Club

Join our online Caudill Club! For students in grades 4 – 8 who do not already participate in a Caudill program at school. Help select the next winner of the Rebecca Caudill Young Readers’ Book Award - visit the official award home page. Read or listen to at least three nominated books and submit a Feedback Form to be eligible to vote for your favorite book. Online ballots will be available in February 2010.

Monarch Award Club

The 2010 Monarch Award Club has arrived! For grades K – 3, who do not already participate in a Monarch program. Help select the next winner of the Monarch Children’s Choice Award. Read or listen to at least five of the nominated books. Get the book list and start reading! Feedback Forms will be available soon to vote for the winner in February.

Caldecott Award

Awarded annually to the artist of the most distinguished American picture book for children.

Coretta Scott King Award

Presented annually to “African American authors and illustrators whose books promote an understanding and appreciation of the “American Dream.”

Laura Ingalls Wilder Medal

Awarded every two years to an author or illustrator whose books, published in the United States, have made a lasting contribution to children’s literature.

Monarch Award

An Illinois Children's Choice Award for a book voted most outstanding by students in kindergarten through 3rd grade.

Newbery Award

Awarded annually to the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children.

The Pura Belpré Award

Honors Latino writers and illustrators whose works best exemplify authentic cultural experiences in children's works of literature.

Rebecca Caudill Young Readers’ Book Award

Honors the author of the book voted most outstanding by Illinois students in grades 4 - 8.

Scott O’Dell Award

Awarded to a “meritorious book published in the previous year for children or young adults.”
