To prepare the Ravinia audience for a performance
of Rachmaninoff's Vespers, theologian Martin Marty quoted
philosopher George Santayana. I'll paraphrase. In order to
understand the universal, we must first enter into the particular.
Listening to the Russian Orthodox inspired vespers was our
opportunity to enter that particular culture through the art of
music.
Still shaken by the September 11, 2001, cataclysm,
we are seeking understanding and looking for universal truths as
we grapple with our fears, doubts, and anger. Marty suggested that
we avoid the superficial by diving deeply in the arts of other
cultures as well as our own to reach that understanding, both
particular and universal.
It is our mission at the Des Plaines Public
Library to assist you in your search for knowledge by providing,
in addition to the printed word, the visual and musical arts of
all cultures, past and present. The library is your local resource
for the art of the world.
The arts do not merely add to the beauty of our
world, they offer us the means to understand it. So come, listen,
see, and experience the world of art at your library.
Understanding is sure to follow.
GIFT FUNDS HISTORICAL PHOTOS AND ART VIDEOS
The Literary Review Book Club of Des Plaines, Friends
of the Library, and other friends have donated $2,000 to
the library in memory of the late Janet Evans. The gift
funded framed historical photographs for the Rotary
Heritage Reading Room and a series of videos on art and
artists for adults and children. |
