My family received a package in the mail
yesterday. It contained our niece’s newly published book, her
labor of love and the results of a driving passion, which is now a
gift of comfort and joy. Her muse visited her in the form of a
sudden rush of commitment that followed the surcease from a
terrifying personal crisis. Rather like a storm after the calm
after the storm.
I tell you this, not just because I’m
exceedingly proud of her accomplishment and enjoy the reflected
glory, but because I want to shine the spotlight on the gift that
writers share with all of us. They find the words to describe pain
too deep for sighs, triumphs that overwhelm us, and the soaring
joys we know in the small things of daily life.
By giving us words, they give us a voice, a voice
that helps us take the measure of the wholeness of our lives.
Thanks be to the authors and poets among us.
