I love a good detective novel, and my favorite
type features a woman detective. I'll read anything from serious
medical stories and stories set in interesting places to
historical escapades and stories that are just some silly fun.
For a serious medical story, I read Patricia
Cornwell. Kay Scarpetta, the series main character, is a lawyer as
well as a pathologist and the medical examiner for the state of
Virginia. The books are set in the city of Richmond in the 1990s
and are filled with the details of modern forensic science, serial
killers, and the intimate details of autopsies. These books are
definitely not for the faint of heart.
Author Nevada Barr writes a truly unique series of
mystery novels, each set in a different national park. Her
character, Anna Pigeon, leaves New York City and takes a job as a
park ranger with the National Parks Service. Anna tracks lions in
the Guadalupe Mountains National Park in Texas, explores caves in
the Lechuguilla Cavern in New Mexico's Carlsbad Caverns National
Park, and scuba dives to shipwrecks in Isle Royale National Park
in Lake Superior. This series is a great way to explore the U.S.
without ever leaving your home.
When it comes to historical escapades, you shouldn’t
miss Elizabeth Peter’s mystery series. The detective here is
Amelia Peabody, an amateur archaeologist and detective with
feminist ideas rare for the Victorian setting in which the series
is set. Also featured is Radcliffe Emerson, an archaeologist with
whom Amelia clashes in the first book, but later marries. Set
against the backdrop of Egypt and the pyramids, these books offer
not only a great location, but a fascinating subject written with
a lot of humor.
Now, if you just want good old fashioned fun, try
Janet Evanovich’s detective series with main character Stephanie
Plum. In the first book in the series, Stephanie loses her job as
a department store lingerie buyer. The only employment she can
find is working for her slimy cousin Vinnie, a bail bondsman,
chasing down people who jump bail. While she has no qualifications
whatsoever as a bounty hunter, she does have an indestructible
powder blue ‘53 Buick, a hamster, and plenty of attitude.
Trenton, New Jersey, where the story is set, will never be the
same once Stephanie takes to the streets.
