Public computers offer Internet access, online reference resources, word processing software, spreadsheets, and more. Wireless Internet access is available throughout the library building to patrons who prefer to bring their own laptop computer. You may access the library catalog to look up books, videos and other materials 24 hours a day through our Web site. Cardholders may use many online reference resources from home through our Web site.
The Des Plaines Public Library now offers wireless, "Wi-Fi", access to the Internet throughout the building for properly equipped laptops. The library's Internet Access Policy applies to all Internet use in the building.
Advantages:
You can access the Internet from anywhere in the building.
There is no waiting or time limit.
Internet access may be faster.
You can download and save files on your own devices.
Limitations:
Printing services and other software are not available via the wireless connection.
The signal strength may vary.
Library staff is unable to assist with laptops, cards or configuration.
Conditions:
Virus, security, and privacy protection is the responsibility of the patron.
The library assumes no responsibility for any alterations or interference with a laptop's configuration, operation, or data files resulting from connection to the library's wireless network.
The library is not responsible for damage, theft, or loss of any kind to a user's equipment, software, data files, or personal property.
The library cannot guarantee that the service will be available at any specific time or that the connection will have any specific quality or speed.
The connection shall not be used for illegal purposes, nor used in such a way to violate library policies. The connection shall not be used for applications that require an excessive amount of bandwidth. Restricting excessive bandwidth use allows the library to ensure network reliability and fair sharing of network resources for all patrons.
All library policies apply to wireless access users.
