Vintage Car Show
Hello,

After many months of planning and special commemorative events, the Des Plaines Public Library's Centennial Celebration is about to culminate in the grand finale - our Centennial Carnival. Consider this your personal invitation to join us for the big day, Sunday, October 7, 2007, from 1-4 p.m. (That's this coming Sunday.) You can read more about the day's festivities below, but we wanted to make sure you marked your calendar for the carnival. The entire event is free of charge, so you can relax, enjoy and be our guest. Bring the family, bring your neighbors, and allow us to thank you for 100 years of support, encouragement and community.

Watch for an in-depth e-newsletter later this month and you'll learn about "What's New?", a grant-funded project that's bringing you some unique online services via the library's Web site. We'll also have news on Halloween programs for the whole family, the Suburban Mosaic community reading program, and a reminder about upcoming computer classes at the library.

See you on Sunday!

Centennial Carnival - this Sunday, October 7
Just one last reminder - our Centennial Celebration wraps up this Sunday
with our amazing Carnival on Library Plaza. It's all free and, well, it just won't be the same without YOU. Read on for more specifics.

Sunday, October 7, 1-4 p.m. on Library Plaza - see you there!
cotton candy sign First of all...
Be hungry when you arrive! Think of this as a chance to indulge yourself in the tastes of childhood memories: cotton candy, popcorn and ice cream. Smiling inevitably brings on a thirst, and we'll have real old-fashioned lemonade and root beer. The root beer will be served with ice cream over at the Des Plaines History Center's Kinder House - get there early and your root beer will arrive in a free souvenir mug. There are free Centennial souvenir cups while supplies last, too.
It's all free until it's all gone.
Book cart drill team in the 4th of July parade Dancing in the Streets?
It just might happen! Jimmy's Bavarians take the stage at 1 p.m. and kick things off in the inimitable fashion one expects from "Chicago's Number One Oompah Band!" Next up is the Prairie Brass Band, an award-winning ensemble performing in the style of a traditional British brass band.

From 1:30-3:30 p.m., the timeless tones of strolling barbershop quartet the Chordmasters will ring through the air. You can catch the Chordmasters on Library Plaza and over at the Kinder House on Pearson Avenue -- after all, the Kinder House is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year as well, and our friends at the Des Plaines History Center are lending a hand with the Carnival.

So, if you love live music, Library Plaza will be the place to be on Sunday, October 7, 2007.
 Share a StoryMarcia Gutierrez
If there's a sure thing about visiting the Des Plaines Public Library or any library, it's the certainty of finding a great story. So what better way to celebrate 100 years of great stories in Des Plaines than with a visit from Marcia Gutiérrez, a bilingual storyteller, spinning stories in both English and en español? Marcia's warm, inviting style is just right for the whole family. She'll be telling stories over at the Kinder House, on Pearson and Prairie, from 1 to 3 p.m. - grab some root beer, find a seat and prepare to be enchanted. And that's not all -- children will receive free bilingual storybooks, while supplies last.
The storytime and books are sponsored by Target corporation logo

Do you have a story about the library that you'd like to share? You can tell us online, by clicking here, or stop by the Memory Book at Sunday's Carnival and write down your remembrances of library visits. It's the involvement and friendship of the community that make the library an exciting and pleasurable place to visit, so tell us what has made DPPL special to you over the years.
A Road Trip Back in Time a LaSalle automobile
Classic car enthusiasts and history buffs will enjoy another attraction at our Centennial Carnival, a Vintage Car Show presented by the Antique Automobile Club of America's Cadillac and LaSalle Chapter. Remember when Archie and Edith Bunker used to sing, "Gee, our old LaSalle ran great?" Well, stop by Library Plaza on Sunday and you can see just what that LaSalle might have looked like, along with lots of other cool rides from days gone by.

Carnival game of chance Step Right Up and Try Your Luck!
We always try to make the library a fun place for kids to hang out, but on Sunday we're really upping the "fun factor." There will be a clown making balloon animals, face painting and a stilt walker (not to mention our storyteller, book giveaway and all those yummy snacks).

We'll also have many of your favorite old-time carnival games and prizes for the winners, so join us on Sunday and try your luck. It's all part of our Centennial Celebration - our opportunity to thank you, the Des Plaines community, for letting us be a part of your lives for one hundred wonderful years.
