Dear Subscriber: Thanks to all who participated in our "Do the Dewey" fundraiser party on April 16. Mark your calendar for April 22, 2006 so you can join the festivities next year. Looking for something to do this summer? Our new Events calendar has listings for every library program, and you can register online for many of them. Read more about it in this issue of E-News. Leslie Steiner, Head of Public Information Services, Editor
Find out what's happening at the library, and register for programs that interest you, all online. Simply go to our Web site, and click on Events. The calendar showing programs for the current month will appear. Put your cursor over any program, and you will see a short description of the program, including time and location. Use the search tool to limit your choices by type of program or range of dates. If the program name is underlined, the library will accept online registration (provided space is still available). The description of the program includes information on "status." If the status line says, "Openings," then space is still available. Click on the program, fill out the short form, and your registration is complete. Online registration is not available for every program, and we still accept registration over the phone or in person. Phone the Registration Desk at 847.376.2787.
Now you can take an audiobook wherever you and your MP3 player go. Beginning June 1, downloadable audiobooks will be available through the library. "Check out" the book online and download it to your personal computer. Then transfer it to your MP3 player for convenient listening. (At this time, downloadable audiobooks are not iPod compatible.) There's no waiting for the titles you want because multiple patrons may borrow the same audiobook at the same time. There are no returns and no overdue fines because the audio file is locked when the three-week loan period is up. You may renew the book once. To register for this service the first time, you must use a library Internet computer. If you need help, ask at the Readers' Services Desk. After registering, you may download audiobooks outside the library from any computer with Internet access. For more information, phone Readers' Services at 847.376.2840.
Buy a brick from the old library as a keepsake. Phone 847-376-2803 for additional information. The library also continues to sell inscribed bricks for Library Plaza. An order form is available on the library Web site under How to Donate.
Need help collecting names for your high school reunion? The Des Plaines Public Library has a selection of high school yearbooks from Maine Township High Schools East, West, North, and South, some dating back to the 1950s. The yearbooks are available for use in the library only. Ask at the Reference Desk on the fourth floor. ("Did I really look that nerdy during senior year?")
