AUTISM AND THE GLUTEN FREE/CASEIN FREE DIET
Tuesday, March 25th
7-8:30p.m.
1st Floor Friends Room
Can a gluten free/casein free (GF/CF) diet help manage or cure autism?
A diagnosis of autism for a child can be overwhelming for parents. Often a first recommendation is diet modification for the child. Sally Martin-Ranft of Des Plaines-based Awakening Holistic Healing Center will discuss the "hows and whys" of implementing a GF/CF diet at this informative program.
The implementation of a GF/CF diet involves removing all sources of gluten and casein from the child's diet. Gluten is found in all products containing wheat, rye and barley. Martin-Ranft will also explain taking the diet a step farther by also removing sugar and bad fats.
This presentation is the second in a series of presentations on autism funded by the "Special Families Need Special Libraries" grant awarded to the library to offer autism-related programs, materials and services For additional information and programming please stop by the Youth Services Department or phone Veronica Schwartz at 847-376-2791.
Funding for this grant was awarded by the Illinois State Library (ISL), a Division of the Office of the Secretary of State, using funds provided by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), under the federal Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA).

NEW HELP AVAILABLE FOR THE VISUALLY IMPAIRED
Say hello to SARA! The Friends of the Des Plaines Public Library recently purchased a SARA (Scanning & Reading Appliance), an easy-to-use machine enabling those who are blind or visually impaired to read a wide variety of printed material including books, mail, newspapers, magazines and more. SARA is located in study room 3004 on the library's third floor.

SARA uses the latest in advanced optical character recognition technology to scan text and then read it aloud in crisp, clear speech in a variety of voices and languages. As the words are "read," they also appear in large type on an attached computer monitor, a function that may also help persons with dyslexia and persons learning to read or learning English as a second language. SARA also plays a variety of "public domain" books stored in it, including "A Tale of Two Cities" by Charles Dickens.
SARA replaces the Reading Edge, a gift of the Des Plaines Lions Club. The Reading Edge may now be checked out to Des Plaines card holders for eight weeks and used in patrons' homes.
To learn more about SARA, or to arrange delivery of the Reading Edge, please call Bob Blanchard at 847-376-2793. |
