Preserving Our Memories

man writingIt is said that we are defined by the stories we tell. This is especially true regarding the legacies we leave behind. My grandfather was a Scottish immigrant who came to this country when he was 19. I remember him as much for the stories he told as for the times we shared.

One of his stories related how he and his brothers often walked seven miles to the ocean to fish and swim when they were children. When I recall this story, it paints a picture of him in my mind. We all have stories like these to tell and pass on to our loved ones. With the world changing at such a rapid pace today, our experiences take on an air of magic and history to our grandchildren and descendants.

This is the inspiration behind “Older Men’s Legacies,” a six-week memoir writing workshop for senior men. The workshop stirs the memories that make great stories and helps the participants get them down on paper. At the end of the workshop, everyone receives a printed booklet containing the stories.

The next workshop begins April 4th and meets every Wednesday through May 11th from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. For more information, please phone 847-376-2809. To register, phone the Registration Desk at 847-376-2787. Register online at www.dppl.org. Click on Events and follow the instructions.
