Summer Reading Issue Sun and sand, baseball and cicadas. It's summer! This year, we are offering three summer reading clubs - for adults, for teens and for kids. All three tie in with our continuing Centennial Celebration. Book lovers of all ages will have the chance to read for fun and prizes and to attend a variety of lively programs. Activities are scheduled from June 3 through July 29. Read on for information and for pleasure! Leslie Steiner, Head of Public Information, Editor
This year, the library is celebrating its centennial, and we invite all adults to share 100 years of books by joining our summer reading club -- "Paging through the Decades: From Wharton to Lahiri." Earn a ticket for each book or audiobook you read. The more you read, the more chances you have to win. Prizes include a DVD player, gift certificates for Border's and AMC Theaters and prizes from local restaurants and merchants. Purchased prizes are the generous contribution of Friends of the Library. Each week, there will be trivia contests on books, movies and music with decades/centennial themes. At the end of the summer reading club, we will draw from the winning entries in each trivia contest for special prizes. More details are available at the Readers' Services Desk on the third floor. Or, phone 847-376-2840. By Roberta Johnson, Readers' Services Librarian

What do books, movies, old fashioned games and clowning around have in common? They are all part of our summer reading club for children - "Carnival of Reading: Celebrating 100 Years of Books at the Des Plaines Public Library." Children in preschool through grade 8 are invited to read or listen to books in order to win an array of prizes. Every child who completes the summer reading club will receive a T-shirt designed by Michelle Friedman and coupons sponsored by the Daily Herald. In addition, children who read books from our summer reading patch booklist will earn a special edition patch that is only available through September 7. Encourage your children to read some of your old favorites this summer. And, you might pick up one or two of theirs. Some of our favorites are:

Adults, teens and kids of all ages can sign up for the library's summer reading clubs on the Mobile Library. Check out books from our great collection and become eligible for prizes. At Apache Park, there is the added bonus of crafts and games provided by the Des Plaines Park District during the Mobile Library's summer stops.
As I headed to my car this morning, I was reminded of my first encounter with cicadas. I was 10 years old, and all was ordinary when I left for school in the morning. When I came home, the trees and sidewalks were covered with crunchy brown shells. I wanted to learn about these new bugs, and the children's room at the library was my first stop. There were books with great pictures and simple information. After visiting the library, I was able to tell the other kids that the cicadas wouldn't be back for 17 years. That would make us 27 when they came again! So, if your child or the child in you wants clear, easy to read information about cicadas or anything else, don't be shy. Visit our Youth Services Department. Our staff will be happy to help you find what you need. By Margie Borris, Library-Community Liaison
What could possibly be more fun than sunning yourself in the Wrigley Field bleachers, watching our beloved Cubs play baseball? This year marks the 100th anniversary of the Cubs' first World Series title. It's also the library's centennial. If you can't get to the game, here are a few books that might cover all the bases for you.
Our South Side hitmen are "back to the grind" this year. We also have books for all of our White Sox fans:
If you're dreaming about a subway series, there are a few books that look at both teams, including:
