    Bookmobiles Began 100 Years Ago
    Mobile Library

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the first bookmobile in the United States. It was a horse-drawn buggy carrying a few hundred books, and it served patrons of the Washington County Free Library in Maryland. Today, there are more than 800 bookmobiles in operation nationwide.

Our Mobile Library is a familiar sight as it visits 39 locations throughout the city every two weeks. The Mobile Library carries over 5,000 items for adults and children of all ages. The collection features current popular materials and includes books, magazines, videos, CDs, DVDs, and audiobooks. With 24 hours advance notice, patrons can also request specific titles or subject areas from the main library collection to be delivered to their stop.

Historic Brick Prices Set by Board
    old library

The Library Board of Trustees has approved pricing for the sale of historic bricks from the old library at 841 Graceland Avenue. The cost will be $15 for the first brick and $10 for each additional brick purchased at the same time.

Each brick will have a small plaque with the name and address of the old library, as well as the dates that the library occupied that site. The library is also exploring the possibility of issuing certificates of authenticity to accompany the historic bricks.

The old building was recently demolished and a new condominium development will be built on its former site. Phone 847.376.2803 for information on purchasing historic bricks.
