If you are buying a new or used car, you may have concerns about automobile safety, reliability, and getting the best price. Visit the Consumer Table on the fourth floor of the library to do some quick research. The annual car issue of Consumer Reports magazine has safety and reliability ratings for the current year's new car models. The editors also publish the New Car Buying Guide, which covers almost every new model, and the Used Car Buying Guide, which includes models going back seven years. All of these guides use the same easy-to-read rating charts. The information comes from consumer surveys, professional expertise, and extensive testing. The Original New Car Cost Guide is published by the Automobile Invoice Service. This bi-monthly resource provides dealer invoice and manufacturers' suggested retail prices for domestic and import cars and light trucks. It also includes equipment information for all models. If you have any questions, please ask at the Reference Desk.
A new antique quilt now hangs in the library's Rotary Heritage Reading Room on the third floor. The quilt dates back to the 1930s or 1940s. It is similar to the renowned quilts made by the women of Gee's Bend, a small, remote, African-American community in Alabama. Also on display are historic photos of Des Plaines and a historic etching donated by Kurt Mager. Framing of the historic photos was funded by a donation from the Friends of Janet Evans. All of the building artwork is funded by donations. The Rotary Heritage Reading Room is a quiet, technology-free place for reading and reflection. It houses the Mullenbach Collection, which was funded by the late Jane Moore to honor her aunt, Jane Mullenbach.
Do hardcover books weigh you down on the train or the plane or at the doctor's office? A paperback novel is just the right size. Next time you're at the library, visit our newly created paperback collection on the third floor. Pick up a couple of great reads today!
