Save the Date(s) Mark your calendar. Our 10-month Centennial Celebration is reaching a close, and we're going out with a bang, not a whimper! September 8 is the date of our old-fashioned croquet tournament for adults and children. On October 7, we'll hold our 100th Anniversary carnival on Library Plaza in front of the building. Come one, come all, and hope for good weather. I've actually retired from the Des Plaines Public Library, so I'm sending you this enews through the miracle of modern technology. I'm planning to attend both big events as a civilian. See you there! Leslie Steiner, Head of Public Information (Retired), Editor
Remember the Red Queen's croquet match in Alice in Wonderland? Here's a chance to join in an old-fashioned croquet tournament without the threat of losing your head. Registration begins at the library on August 1 and continues through August 31 for a croquet tournament scheduled on Saturday, September 8, 1-5 p.m. Adult's and children's teams (three persons per team) are invited to participate for fun and prizes. Equipment will be provided at the event.
The croquet tournament will be held from 1-5 p.m. on September 8 in the Central Rose Garden on Ashland Avenue across from Central School. (The school is at 1526 East Thacker.) The event is part of the library's Centennial Celebration. It is cosponsored with the Des Plaines Park District and Graham Hills and the G.L. Hills Funeral Home. Come out and cheer for your favorite teams, and don't forget to bring your camera. The Chordmasters strolling barbershop quartet will perform familiar melodies from the turn of the century to the Beatles between 1:15 and 3:15 p.m. There will also be cool drinks, grand prizes and fun photo opportunities with life-size cutouts of storybook characters. Please register to compete in the tournament at the Registration Desk, 847-376-2787. For information, phone Roberta Johnson at 847-376-2816.
Come one, come all, to the Des Plaines Public Library's 100th Anniversary carnival, Sunday, October 7 from 1-4 p.m. on Library Plaza. This afternoon of fun for the whole family marks the conclusion of our 10-month Centennial Celebration. Bring your children and grandchildren, and the neighbors' kids, too. You'll all want to ride on the carousel made possible by a generous donation from Friends of the Library. Enjoy playing a variety of old-fashioned games and more. We'll have special activities for every age. It's all free and everyone is invited!
At our 100th Anniversary carnival, you'll want to keep time with the Prairie Brass Band and sing along with Jimmy's Bavarians Show Band and The Chordmasters, a strolling barbershop quartet. Quench your thirst with refreshing lemonade, and fill up with cotton candy and popcorn. Stroll over to the Des Plaines History Center just down the street for home made root beer and tasty ice cream. (The Kinder House, current home of the History Center, turns 100 this year as well.) The day's activities are cosponsored by the library and the Des Plaines Historical Society.
Did you miss any of our 10-month Centennial Celebration activities? Highlights will be shown on Channel 24 in the near future. Watch for details. The program is being produced by Library Production Studio/Library Cable Network. Watch Channel 24 regularly to see programs videotaped at the Des Plaines, Arlington Heights, Prospect Heights and Skokie public libraries. Are you ready for a little PlainTalk ? That's the name of the library's new blog, which debuted on July 2. The blog is the creation of Web Services Librarian Karen McBride, who also moderates. It gives the community the opportunity to discuss a variety of topics ranging from area traffic, weather and the riverfront to the best pizza in town, the best 100 books of the century and the city's best-kept secrets. A blog, originally "Weblog," has been defined as "a frequently updated Web site consisting of personal observations, excerpts from other sources, etc., typically run by a single person and usually with hyperlinks to other sites; an online journal or diary."
Our PlainTalk blog is named for the city of Des Plaines, but also for the Midwestern ideal of speaking plainly at a level in which everyone can participate openly and honestly. Ground rules are posted on the library Web site and participants are asked to the keep their comments appropriate to the topic at hand. McBride adds new posts to the blog three or more times a week, but she points out that "the library needs the community's 'voice' to keep the blog going." To access PlainTalk , visit the library Web site and click on PlainTalk . Add a comment of your own by clicking on the comments link at the end of each entry.
