Centennial Programs
Musical Performance – The American Songbag: 1907-1957
To kick off the library’s Centennial Celebration,
the Michael J. Miles ensemble will present a decade-by-decade musical review of the
first half of the 20th century on Sunday, January 21 at 2 p.m. This is a Centennial program.
This program is partially supported by a grant from the Illinois
Arts Council, a state agency. Cosponsored by Friends of the Library.
Introduction to Digital Photography

Photographer Jerry Hug will demonstrate how to use digital
equipment, software and various photo techniques on Wednesday,
January 24 at 7 p.m. On February 7 at 7 p.m., Hug will
demonstrate how to enhance digital images using a variety of
software. These are centennial programs.

Decades of Dresses: 1910-1991

Special occasion dresses from the past will be presented
along with information about women's history, fashion trends and
related contemporary events on Wednesday, February 21 at 7
p.m. This is a Centennial program.

Concert – Ragtime: A Retrospective
At 2 p.m. on Sunday, February 25, pianist Sue
Keller will present a piano concert of ragtime music. This is a
Centennial program. more

Do You Live in a Sears House? The Mail Order House Phenomenon

Historical architectural researcher Rebecca Hunter will
present the program, “Do You Live in a Sears House? The Mail
Order House Phenomenon: 1906-1946,” on Wednesday, February 28
at 7 p.m. The program includes a slide show on mail order
homes, as well as the history and relationship of the major
companies that sold the homes in the Midwest market. This is a
centennial celebration program.

I Want My HDTV, But Need HELP!

On Wednesday, March 7 at 7 p.m. Eric Palm,
Assistant to the City Manager for the City of Des
Plaines,
will present a program on the new types of televisions,
the different complementary systems (such as DVDs and DVRs) and
the differences between dish and cable. (Palm’s responsibilities
include cable franchise enforcement and managing the City’s
government access cable channel). This is a Centennial Program.
Living History – A Fireside Chat with Franklin D. Roosevelt
R. J. Lindsey will present a dramatic portrayal of President
Franklin Delano Roosevelt at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, March 14.
This is a Centennial program.

Bob Skilnik will present “Beer: A History of Brewing in
Chicago,” a slide show about the rise and fall of the
brewing industry in Chicago on Wednesday, May 23 at 7 p.m.
Getting the Most from Google: The Basics and Beyond
Librarian Steven Jablonski from the Skokie Public Library
will present a lecture on how to get the most from the popular
Internet search engine Google™ on Wednesday, June 6, 7 p.m.

A
musical overview of rock 'n roll from the fifties to the
nineties by Ac*Rock on Sunday, June 10, 2-3:30 p.m.
Film Program: The Life and Times of Allen Ginsberg
The library will show a documentary film on the life and work
of Beat Generation poet Allen Ginsberg on Wednesday, June 20
at 7 p.m.

Historic Route 66
Dave Clark will present a slide show on the history of the
famous highway, Route 66 on Wednesday, June 27 at 7
p.m.
A Tribute to the Beatles
Come hear the music of the Beatles performed by the tribute
band Meet the Beetles on Sunday, July 8 at 2 p.m.
Old Fashioned Games
3rd-5th graders can experience games from days gone by on
Monday, July 16 at 2 p.m.
Millennium Park Unveiled
Jeff Mishur presents a slide show exploring the architecture
and public art of Chicago’s Millennium Park on Wednesday,
September 5 at 7 p.m. Millennium Park opened in July, 2004.
This program takes a look at the history of this epic project
and at the central features of the park.

One person’s junk is another’s treasure. Learn the ins and
outs of selling your stuff on eBay on Wednesday, July 18 at 7
p.m.
A Musical Tribute to Barbra Streisand
The concert on Sunday, August 5 at 2 p.m. will feature
hit songs recorded and performed by one of the greatest voices
of our time. The program will include Barbra's breakout hits
People and Second Hand Rose as well as The Way we Were,
Evergreen, You Don't Bring Me Flowers and more. Piano
accompaniment.
Genetic Engineering
The past, present and future of genetic engineering will be
presented by Mark Hayden of Abbott Molecular Diagnostics, Des
Plaines on Wednesday, August 8, 7 p.m.

Tuesday, August 14, 7 p.m.
Just What is American Food
This presentation on Wednesday, August 29, 7 p.m., looks at patterns of immigration to the
United States in the 20th Century and how the integration of new
groups of immigrants into American society is reflected in our
cookbooks and food preferences.
Dramatic Portrayal: Ike and Mamie Eisenhower
William and Sue Wills will perform a dramatic portrayal of
Ike and Mamie Eisenhower on Sunday, September 16, 2 p.m. Share the Eisenhowers’
experiences as a military family and their life in the White
House.
Documentary Film
A feature length documentary film on the life and death of
the electric car will be screened on Thursday, September 27, 6:30 p.m.
